Active Schools News:

Physical Activity and Education and Local Partnerships:

Physical Activity is the promotion and engagement of exercise and movement in addition to the 60 minute per week timetabled curriculum subject of Physical Education. Largy NS actively promotes the message that children require 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. In Largy NS we have been extremely busy as we have engaged in a wide variety of different programmes, ideas and initiatives which have inspired the children to become more active.

Largy NS promotes the full range of fundamental movement skills during break times and pupils are encouraged to run, play and to do ‘talking as you’re walking’. We have two daily playground breaks (break and lunch) and our school yard is zoned and marked to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities. We also take part in The Daily Mile each day.

Our Active School Slogan is Do not delay, get out and play!:

Physical Education

All classes are taught all of the 6 different PE strands each year: Athletics, Aquatics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games, Outdoor and Adventure Activities. We allocate a balanced amount of teaching time to the different strands. For the 2023/24 school year, we have all worked together to focus on the Athletics  and Games Strand in particular.. We learned how to introduce and teach various different athletic skills through fun games.

Each class receives at least 60 minutes of timetabled physical education per week. By taking part in the Active School Flag programme it is helping us to focus on an improved provision of Physical Education in the school. We ensure that as per our Whole School PE Plan, all of our PE activities are planned so that they are accessible by all pupils. In this way, we always encourage our parents to liase with us if their child has any issue that we need to be aware of when teaching our PE lessons. We will also give feedback to parents on their child’s progress in PE in PT meetings and in their annual school report.

We carry out regular audits of our PE Equipment where we dispose of old or broken equipment. Our equipment and resources are clearly labelled, well organised and easily accessible in our PE store.

We have a noticeboard for our Active School Flag news. We’re currently running 2 poster competitions. One for our favourite sport and one for our active school slogan

When children are successful at sports and activities outside of school, we take the time to celebrate their achievements. Photographs are taken or shared from our local newspaper. These are displayed on our notice board and shared with parents through our school newsletter.

We have good partnerships with local sports clubs, who come in during the year to give taster sessions, including the GAA, Athletics and Tennis. This year we have had football training from James, and Leitrim Sports Partnership provides 6 weeks of Athletics Coaching improving FMS across all ages. The children get so much enjoyment from this. Mark is joining us during Active School Week for a Soccer session.  Manorhamilton Tennis Club are currently visiting us for coaching every Monday. Keep an eye for photos

Action Day:

We are very lucky to live in a beautiful area of rural Leitrim. We appreciate that we have a diverse range of trees and plants growing naturally in our school grounds and lots of insect life and occasionally a visit from some wildlife such as a hare.

We looked to see what else we could do and realised that our raised beds had fallen into disrepair.

Patrick ,our caretaker, made some new ones. For our Action Day, we planted a new Sensory Garden and some vegetables. Fiona knew what plants worked best and also attracted bees and butterflies.

The pupils, teachers,SNAs,caretaker,Frank (secretary) and Fiona (parent) all helped to create a spot we can enjoy as well as the bees and butterflies.'
